Role
Barrett Hayton went fifth overall in the 2018 draft, and the Mammoth matched a New Jersey offer sheet on July 8, 2026 to keep him on a $4.775 million deal for this season, per KUTV. Armstrong called him "a key piece for us." Hayton said he was "fired up to get back with my teammates and remain in Utah."
He can't be traded before July 1 and could reach unrestricted free agency then, and Utah can sign him to an extension starting Jan. 1. This season he has no goals and 5 assists in 7 games, with a plus-5 rating. One of those points came on the power play and one shorthanded. His average ice time is about 13:32.
Outlook
The offer sheet shows what other teams think he's worth. His production has bounced around. He had 20 goals and 26 assists in 82 games in 2024-25, then 10 goals and 15 assists in 67 games last year.
Our take: he has 13 shots without a goal so far this year, so goals should arrive. We'd extend him in January if the price is reasonable. A 40-point season with a hot finish would help his case.
