Our take

Role

Jack McBain is a 6'4", 219-pound center who Arizona drafted in the third round (63rd overall) in 2018. He signed a five-year, $21.25 million extension in July 2025, a $4.25 million cap hit, per TSN. Bill Armstrong described him then as "a big, strong, physical player who competes hard on a nightly basis."

He's averaging about 12:41 a game this season. Through 7 games he has 1 goal and 1 assist, plus 12 penalty minutes and a 72.7% faceoff rate.

Outlook

His best year remains 2024-25, when he had 13 goals and 14 assists in 82 games. Last season he finished with 9 goals and 16 assists in 75 games. The faceoff number comes from only seven games of data, so we won't read much into it.

Our take: The Mammoth paid for a big, hard-to-play-against center, and that matters more than his scoring. If he gets back near 13 goals, a contract that runs through 2029-30 looks fine.
